In the wake of a bitter professional betrayal, Caretta "Cara" Rutledge, a high-flying advertising executive from Chicago, finds herself drawn back to the languid rhythms of the South Carolina low country. Leaving behind her corporate life, Cara returns to her ancestral beach house, a charming yet dilapidated refuge nestled on an island off Charleston. Here, her widowed mother, Lovie Rudland, resides, a woman of quiet resilience living a life entwined with the ebb and flow of the sea and its creatures.
