Plot

As the curtain falls on the Spanish Civil War in 1939, a chilling event transpires: a father and his oldest son are executed by a squad of La Falange soldiers, the embodiment of fascist politics, on accusations of treason. Among them, the trigger-happy Rogelio finds himself haunted by the piercing gaze of the younger son, a look that implants an unshakeable conviction—he will meet his end at the hands of this child once he matures. Haunted by this prophecy, Rogelio discovers the young boy had buried his kin beneath the humble branch of a fig tree, a lone sentinel over their earthly remains. This sparks an obsession within Rogelio, a compulsion to nurture this fig tree into a towering testament of life amidst death. With the aid of Cipriana, the wife of Mayor Benito, Rogelio turns recluse, his world narrowing to the fig tree and the grave it guards. His solitary mission is plagued by the persistent Ermo, a merciless opportunist who fabricated the treason accusation to seize their farm. Driven by greed, Ermo is determined to unearth the grave, lured by tales of money hidden within the deceased's clothing. As the years roll on, Rogelio's fig tree transforms into a beacon of miracles, drawing villagers on a religious pilgrimage to his once isolated domain. This newfound reverence stirs resentment in Pedro Alberto, the once youthful leader of the execution squad, now a flourishing businessman haunted by the specter of their shared past. Pedro Alberto, desperate to erase the past's stains, attempts to uproot Rogelio and his fig tree, only to be met with unwavering resistance. This defiance fans the flames of Pedro Alberto's rage, igniting a relentless pursuit to obliterate all traces of the past, while Rogelio stands firm, forever tethered to the fig tree—the silent witness of a forgotten crime.
