Plot

Within the tranquil suburbs of Santa Monica, California, sisters Ingrid (Dorothy Provine) and Patti Randall (Hayley Mills) navigate independence in their family home while their parents trot the globe. Their Siamese cat, D.C. - an acronym for "Darn Cat" - is an adventurous feline with a knack for nocturnal exploits. As the clock strikes nine, D.C. embarks on his nightly food scavenging journey, much to Patti's bemusement. One night, D.C. returns home bearing an unusual clue linked to a notorious bank heist involving a $250,000 loot and the mysterious disappearance of a teller named Margaret Miller (Grayson Hall). Patti, convinced of her pet's inadvertent detective skills, approaches the F.B.I. with her theory, prompting the assignment of Agent Zeke Kelso (Dean Jones) to the case. Kelso, unbeknownst to his superiors, is plagued with cat allergies, a revelation that could jeopardize his career. Nevertheless, he and his team must shadow D.C. on his nightly adventures to uncover the whereabouts of the robbers and, hopefully, a still-alive Margaret. Their mission is further complicated by Patti's theatrical inclinations, the need for discretion around their nosy neighbor Mrs. MacDougall (Elsa Lanchester), Patti's surf-obsessed boyfriend Canoe Henderson (Tom Lowell), and Gregory Benson (Roddy McDowall), a timid man smitten with Ingrid. Meanwhile, the two elusive robbers, Dan (Neville Brand) and Iggy (Frank Gorshin), must navigate their own hurdles, including a greedy landlady with a keen interest in profiting from her new tenants. In this delightful blend of comedy and suspense, "That Darn Cat!" takes us on a twist-filled journey through suburban life, as ordinary individuals and an extraordinary cat join forces to unravel a criminal mystery.
