Plot

In the quiet hours of the night, within the sterile walls of his modern psychiatric facility, Dr. Tremayne (Donald Pleasence) engages in a hushed conversation with his visiting contemporary, Nicholas (Jack Hawkins). He unfolds intriguing tales of four peculiar patients whose enigmatic cases he has successfully unraveled. In the first tale, "Mr. Tiger", we meet Paul (Russell Lewis), a delicate child born into affluence, yet trapped amidst his parents' incessant squabbles. His only refuge is a friendship with an imaginary tiger, his silent roar echoing in the corridors of his solitude. In the next narrative, "Penny Farthing", Timothy (Peter McEnery), a merchant of antiquities, comes into possession of a penny-farthing bicycle, a heritage piece with an uncanny knack for time travel, eerily guided by the spectral presence of Uncle Albert (Frank Forsyth) immortalized in an old portrait. The third tale, "Mel", introduces Brian (Michael Jayston) who dares to showcase a deceased tree, uncannily human in its form, as an avant-garde art piece in his domestic space. This offbeat fascination infuriates his envious wife Bella, played by Dame Joan Collins, setting a stage for a unique marital discord. Finally, in "Luau", the flamboyant literary agent Auriol (Kim Novak) throws an extravagant luau for her new client Kimo (Michael Petrovitch). Yet, Kimo's attention seems to drift towards Auriol's stunning daughter Ginny (Mary Tamm). As Ginny departs for an undisclosed vacation, a complex plan for the luau unfurls with the help of Kimo's assistant. Immersed in a world where the ordinary meets the uncanny, each tale bears witness to the myriad facets of madness, unraveling the intricate tapestry of the human psyche.
