Plot

In the heart of the Iraq War's escalation in April 2004, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl finds himself stationed at Quantico, engrossed in the grim mathematics of war. His proposals, although astute, are brushed aside due to his lack of recent battlefield experience. Seizing an opportunity to connect with the frontlines, Strobl volunteers for an unanticipated mission, one that transcends the battlefield—escorting the remains of Pfc. Chance Phelps, a young soldier tragically killed in action. This solemn journey takes Strobl from the solemn hush of the Dover mortuary to the heartfelt tributes in Philadelphia, onward by plane to Minneapolis and finally to the rustic landscapes of Phelps' Wyoming home. Along this poignant odyssey, Strobl finds himself becoming a conduit of national grief and respect, collecting tokens of gratitude, heartfelt words, and small gifts from a multitude of strangers, all destined for the grieving family. Yet, as Strobl navigates this homage to a fallen soldier, he embarks on a deeply personal exploration. Amid the echoing silence of his own soul-searching, what powerful truths will he uncover? Taking Chance is an evocative journey that explores the profound impact of loss, the resonance of sacrifice, and the unspoken bonds that connect us all.
