Sweet November (1968)

“Sara... She had to be remembered by every man she met. So she divided the calendar into twelve men and gave each a month and a key to her apartment. Charlie's month was November because he belonged to Sara as no one ever would again.”

Plot

In the bustling heart of New York City, as the autumnal hues of late October set in, a rather peculiar romance unfolds between Englishman Charlie Blake and the eccentric 22-year-old Sara Deever. Following an unlikely meeting, where Sara's whimsical antics cause Charlie to retake his driver's test, an inexplicable attraction develops. Despite Charlie's confusion over Sara's peculiar ways, the two form a unique bond. Sara, an artist who sublets apartments in Brooklyn Heights as her main livelihood, offers a strange proposal: Charlie should become her 'November'. Sara's life follows an unusual rhythm. Every month, she selects a new man, usually someone with a problem she perceives needs fixing, to live with her and experience a rehabilitative journey. The man leaves at the stroke of midnight on the last day, no questions asked. Seeing Charlie's rigid lifestyle as a box manufacturer, his fixation on time, and his stiff three-piece suits, Sara senses an underlying issue and believes he would benefit from her monthly intervention. Although skeptical, Charlie agrees to this unorthodox arrangement, curious about the enigmatic Sara. As November unfurls, they plunge into an immersive journey, unraveling the layers of their personalities, and unexpectedly falling in love. Charlie meets a few of his predecessors, learns about Sara's prospective 'December', and befriends her vegetarian confidant Alonzo. However, the ticking clock threatens their blossoming love, fueling Charlie's desperation to understand Sara's steadfast adherence to her one-month rule. As he delves deeper, he uncovers a haunting truth that provides a poignant climax to this unconventional love story. Will Sara break her rule for Charlie, or will he become another chapter in her calendar of fleeting romances? This question forms the core of 'Sweet November', a unique tale of love, time, and transformation.
