Plot

In the glimmering world of New York's elite, the marriage of wealthy socialites Susan and Barrie Trexel teeters on the edge of collapse. Their union, long present in name only, is marred by Susan's self-absorption and Barrie's drowning sorrows in alcohol. As a result, their teenage daughter Blossom, a slightly awkward young woman due to a lack of parental guidance, is left to drift between boarding school and summer camp. In the eyes of their high-society friends, Susan is the lesser of two evils, their loyalty leaning towards her primarily due to Barrie's perpetual drunken state. Only Charlotte, a figure of quiet compassion, finds herself sympathetic towards Barrie. As Susan embarks on a European vacation, Barrie seizes the opportunity to sober up, driven by a desire to mend his fractured relationship with Blossom and create the cohesive family unit she longs for. Upon her return, Susan, now a fervent follower of a new religious movement, takes refuge at her friend Irene's house, avoiding Barrie at all costs. Seemingly bewitched by her newfound spirituality, she becomes a zealous advocate, determined to spread the divine truth she discovered in Europe among her circle of friends, much to their exasperation. In an ironic twist, Barrie uses Susan's religious awakening against her, negotiating a summer of togetherness at their country house, mainly for Blossom's sake. If he falters and returns to his vice, he promises Susan an immediate divorce, with the understanding that their reunion will be devoid of any physical intimacy. As the summer unfolds, the estranged couple grapples with their individual needs and the meaning of their relationship. Amidst the tension, a question emerges - will Susan's spiritual journey and Barrie's quest for sobriety save their family or lead them down separate paths? This gripping tale of self-discovery, redemption, and the complexities of love promises an intriguing exploration of the human condition within the confines of high society.
