Plot

In 2008, the world of major league baseball was a melting pot, with over a quarter of its members hailing from Latin America. Among them is Miguel "Sugar" Santos, a focused 19-year-old from the Dominican Republic, who is given the chance to change his life when he signs with Kansas City. Transplanted to Phoenix for tryouts, he then finds himself uprooted to Bridgetown, Iowa, a fictional town where he joins the Class A team, "The Swing", and experiences life with a local farm family. "Sugar" embarks on a journey that tests his mettle - trading the familiarity of home, his mother, and girlfriend for a culture that's entirely foreign. His struggle to grasp English, combat nerves, and maintain a rigorous work ethic is heightened by the roller coaster of early triumphs and setbacks. Navigating complex dynamics of friendships, the sting of sporadic racism, and the confusion of a woman's mixed signals, Sugar experiences the bitter and the sweet of his new life. When an injury sidelines him, he is tempted by the promise of performance-enhancing drugs. Throughout it all, he searches for his sense of self and purpose. The question remains: will Sugar taste the ultimate success of reaching the Majors, or even playing in the bright lights of New York? The answer lies in his journey, a test of perseverance and dreams.
