Plot

In the tumultuous era of 1976 apartheid Johannesburg, Andre Stander, an efficient yet empathetic police captain, finds himself at the epicenter of a moral and emotional cyclone. Played by Thomas Jane, Stander is a dedicated servant of the law, combating the rampant crime in the city. However, when an unarmed protestor becomes the victim of his trembling trigger finger, his world crumbles, and he is thrown into a whirlwind of guilt and disillusionment. His faith shattered in the system he once served, Stander morphs into a rebellious and audacious figure. He daringly decides to challenge the corrupt bureaucracy from the inside, executing an audacious spree of twenty-six bank heists while still donning the uniform of a police officer. His brazen act of defiance makes him a notorious figure, simultaneously feared and admired. However, his adventurous exploit comes to a halt when he is captured and sentenced to a staggering thirty-two years in prison. But Stander, now a symbol of anti-establishment, refuses to be caged. With the help of fellow inmates and future gang members, Lee McCall and Allan Heyl, he engineers a daring escape. United by their drive for freedom and rebellion, they form the infamous "Stander Gang." From 1983 to 1984, the Stander Gang embarks on a relentless bank-robbing spree, pulling off as many as four heists a day. Their escapades continue to mock the system and make headlines, transforming them into legendary figures in the annals of crime. "Stander" is a thrilling rollercoaster ride through the life of a man torn between duty and rebellion, an intriguing exploration of the fine line between law enforcement and law evasion.
