Plot

On a languid Sunday morning, as the church bells echo insistently across the barracks, army officer Arnost stirs from his sleep in his stark, unkempt room. With the world outside still finding its rhythm, he gradually comes to terms with the uneventful day that lies ahead. He toys with his loaded pistol, teasing death by placing it against his head and in his mouth, but never pulling the trigger. His quiet solitude is punctuated by fleeting flashbacks of his past filled with unrestrained drinking and fleeting encounters with playful women, interspersed with surreal daydreams of forced marriages. Arnost's life is entwined with three different blondes. Two are mature women - one a slender mystery, aloof in her ways, and the other a voluptuous enigma, possessive in her desires. The third, a young girl, whose innocent conversations with Arnost provide him a unique solace. Arnost's day takes a turn when he spots two young women sunbathing topless through a spyglass, brazenly disregarding the sanctity of the military zone. Taking umbrage, he instructs the barracks' gatekeeper to apprehend them. His authority mocked, he pens a report. His charade of forgetfulness earns him a loan from the unsuspecting gatekeeper, leading him to a local bar, where he drowns himself in liquor, in the company of the voluptuous blonde. The woman's advances are met with abrupt dismissal as Arnost, drowned in a sea of alcohol, retreats to his bed. In his intoxicated stupor, he conjures vivid visions of the other two blondes, their faces illuminating his dim room as the tedious Sunday draws to a close.
