Plot

As Spud Milton navigates the tumultuous waters of adolescence, he uncovers a critical life lesson: appearances can be deceptive, especially when it comes to women and fools. "I've matured in countless ways", Spud pens down confidently on his sixteenth birthday. It's 1992, a time of radical transformation in South Africa, a country teetering on the brink of an unpredictable future. Yet, Spud anticipates a serene journey as he re-enters the realm of his boarding school as a senior. But life has other plans; his spiteful nemesis returns to haunt him, a chatty Malawian becomes his new roommate, and he's surrounded by the usual gang of eccentrics he's grown to call friends. Amidst this chaos, Spud's world seems more precarious than ever; he grapples with the complexities of Shakespeare, wrestles with his faith and the power of pessimism, and develops a distaste for fried fish, thanks to a startling revelation about his grandmother, Wombat. Spud's journey to manhood is a rollercoaster ride where certainty is a rare commodity.
