Plot

In the 1930s, Britain is a nation nursing the wounds of World War I and wrestling with the grip of a debilitating depression. Amidst this tumultuous landscape, Sarah Burton (Anna Maxwell Martin), a fiery spirit with progressive ideas, returns to her tradition-bound home county. As the newly appointed headmistress of South Riding, her modernistic ideologies breathe new life into the school, especially in the heart of Lydia Holly (Charlie May-Clark), a bright scholarship student hailing from the slums. Sarah's innovative thinking, however, ripples through her conservative community, causing tensions to rise. While her ideals attract some allies like Joe Astell (Douglas Henshall), they also ignite fierce opposition, specifically from Robert Carne (David Morrissey), a lofty landlord whose presence she finds intolerable. South Riding thus becomes a stage where clashes between old and new, tradition and change, unfold, with Sarah Burton at the heart of this captivating drama.
