Plot

In the sun-drenched summer of 1910, the enchanting Channel Coast beaches become the scene of an enigma as a series of tourists mysteriously vanish. Intrigue descends upon the serene coastline, drawing the notorious inspectors Machin and Malfoy to its heart. Their investigations lead them to the extraordinary Slack Bay, a mystical junction where the sea and the Slack river unite only during high tide. Dwelling in this distinctive locale is a tight-knit community of fishermen and oyster cultivators, among them the intriguing Bréfort family, led by the patriarch known as "The Eternal". His rule extends over his playful brood of sons, including the fiery 18-year-old Ma Loute. The Bréforts, famed ferrymen of Slack Bay, live in stark contrast to their affluent neighbors, the eccentric Van Peteghems, who reside in a mansion overlooking the bay. Each summer, the degenerate and decadent Van Peteghems descend upon their villa, their aristocratic lives intertwined with the ordinary local folk during their leisurely strolls, sailing excursions, and seaside bathing. Amid this intriguing blend of classes, a peculiar romance unfurls between the spirited Ma Loute and the mischievous young Billie Van Peteghem. Over the span of five transformative days, this unusual love story sends ripples of chaos through both families, shaking their deeply rooted values and centuries-old way of life. As confusion and mystification overtake the Bréforts and Van Peteghems, the captivating tale of Slack Bay unfolds, shadowed by the ever-present mystery of the disappearing tourists.
