Plot

In the tranquility of the Greek island of Kos, a wounded German paratrooper, Stroszek, finds himself stationed alongside his wife Nora, a compassionate Greek nurse, and two fellow soldiers bearing the scars of war. Their mission, seemingly mundane, is to guard a decaying fortress that houses a munitions depot. Life on the island is anything but eventful; Becker, a scholar of the classics, loses himself in the translation of ancient inscriptions found within the fortress, while Meinhart becomes an architect of inventive traps for the pesky cockroaches. Nora and Stroszek find solace in crafting fireworks from the depot's grenade gunpowder. But beneath the island's calm veneer and the routine simplicity, a sinister transformation takes hold of Stroszek. The relentless heat and the stifling monotony slowly unravel his sanity. He becomes a menacing presence, driving his companions from the fortress and casting a shadow of terror over the city with threats of detonating the munitions depot. Amidst the looming crisis, the German command is thrust into a delicate situation, tasked with the intricate challenge of defusing both the physical and psychological explosives. Will they succeed without causing an explosion that could consume both the fortress and Stroszek's fragile mind?
