In the aftermath of the Civil War, Jim Trask, once the celebrated sheriff of the divided town of Abilene, Kansas, makes a haunting return from the Confederate front, finding a town that had mourned him as dead. As he steps back into the ghost of his former life, he discovers unsettling changes, the town now teeters on the brink of a range war, its inhabitants bitterly divided between the long-standing farmers and the burgeoning cattlemen. His old comrade-in-arms, Dave Mosely, now bearing the weight of a lost hand and a prosperous cattle enterprise, is all set to marry Peggy, Trask's erstwhile sweetheart.
