Plot

In the heartland of Georgia, the audacious General Marmaduke Oldfish Pepper embarks on a venture to Hollywood with his daughter, Peggy Pepper, fueled by a relentless mission to prove her mettle as a serious dramatic actress to the glittering world of Hollywood. The Peppers, however, find themselves in the midst of countless other Hollywood hopefuls, their dreams far from the effortless rise to fame they envisioned. Their path crosses with Billy Boone, a bit player in a comedy troupe, who sees in Peggy the perfect fit for his upcoming slapstick film. Unaware of the comedic nature of the film, Peggy dives into her first scene, only to realize her Georgia "hokum" acting is a perfect match for broad farce rather than the serious drama she imagined. Despite the initial shock, Peggy embraces her natural comedy under the gentle persuasion of Billy, who is gradually falling for her. Her transition into comedy propels her to overnight success as a comedic movie actress. As her star ascends, the serious side of Hollywood takes notice, eager to capitalize on her unexpected success. Peggy is swept off her feet by her leading man, Andre Telfair, or rather, French Count Andre d'Bergerac, who convinces her that her off-screen persona must mirror her on-screen gravitas for her to achieve true success in Hollywood. Thus, the down-home Georgia waif, Peggy Pepper, transforms into the sophisticated French aristocrat, "Patricia Pepoire." However, as she rises in the ranks of serious Hollywood, she begins to distance herself from her roots, ignoring Billy when their paths cross again. When her newfound fame starts to wane, and the very people who once adored her now fail to understand her "ART," she plans to marry Andre to secure a faux title. But Billy, still smitten, refuses to let her drift away without resistance. Peggy's journey from a hopeful starlet to a comedic sensation and then to a serious artiste forces her to grapple with her identity. She must decide whether the price of her initial goal of becoming a serious dramatic actress is worth the loss of her true self.
