Shadows and Fog (1991)

In the heart of an obscure and foggy night, the seemingly insignificant bookkeeper, Max Kleinman, is roused from his slumber by a band of men. They demand his support in their vigilante quest to apprehend a serial murderer, a sinister strangler who lurks in the fog and kills with a wire cord. Despite their dismissive treatment of Kleinman, they shroud him in their plan, refusing to reveal his part in this dangerous game. Meanwhile, the town buzzes with the arrival of a traveling circus. Among the performers, young, innocent Irmy, a sword swallower, is dealing with her own turmoil. She abandons the circus and her deceitful clown boyfriend, Paul, in the middle of the night, driven by heartbreak and a longing for motherhood that he doesn't share. As Kleinman navigates the shadowy, fog-enshrouded streets, he crosses paths with a multitude of characters, including the lost and frightened Irmy. Her quest for a safe haven leads her to unexpected places, even a local brothel. Amidst the chaos of the night, the pair find themselves unwittingly drawn together, their encounters stirring up deeper questions about their lives. However, as they grapple with their personal issues, they become entangled in the town's murderous mystery. The duo must not only evade the foggy murderer's grasp but also navigate the volatile landscape of competing lynch mobs. As the townsfolk seek justice, Kleinman, with his convenient presence, could easily become the scapegoat they are looking for. They want someone, anyone, to pay for the gruesome murders tearing their town apart, and Kleinman might be an easy target. In the midst of a dark and foggy night, Kleinman and Irmy's entwined fates lead them into a labyrinth of danger and self-discovery, where secrets lurk in the shadows and nothing is as it seems.
