Plot

In the heat of the summer of 1968, we dive into the tumultuous life of Wolfgang, a free-spirited 14-year-old German boy residing in a quiet province town in northern Lower Saxony. His world turns upside down when his complicated love for his own mother, and the ensuing feud with his stepfather, results in his deportation to a stark Christian boarding school. This institution, masquerading as a sanctuary, is run by a deranged headmaster and his staff, whose sole mission is to break the spirits of the boys entrusted in their care. Tortured, overworked, and suffocating under the weight of his longing for freedom, Wolfgang makes a daring and rebellious escape. He returns to his hometown, fueled by the hope for a warm welcome and understanding. However, he's met with a chilling betrayal instead. His own flesh and blood refuse to believe his harrowing tale and hand him back to the very hell he'd fled from. Months later, an unexpected twist of fate takes Wolfgang's stepfather out of the picture. His mother, now burdened by regret and loneliness, yearns to welcome her son back into her life. But Wolfgang has long since realized that there's no turning back. His path now is one of self-discovery, away from the home that betrayed him and towards a world that's his to navigate. "Sanctuary" (2015) is a riveting portrayal of a young boy's struggle for freedom and self-identity amidst a world that seems determined to crush his spirit. His journey becomes a testament to resilience and the unyielding power of the human spirit.
