Plot

The year is 1953, and St. Magnus Catholic School in Hamilton, Ontario serves as the backdrop for the compelling journey of 14-year-old Ralph Walker. A quintessential teenager, Ralph's fascination with smoking and the opposite sex make him the target of mockery among peers and a constant source of trouble with the strict school headmaster, Father Fitzpatrick. An unexpected turn of events forces Ralph to channel his energies into joining the school's cross-country running team, under the unconventional guidance of Father Hibbert. Ralph's life is far from ordinary. He lives alone in his family home, weaving tales for the authorities about residing with his allegedly living paternal grandparents, while assuring his hospitalised war-widow mother that he's staying with a friend. However, when his mother falls into a coma, Ralph's perspective on life takes a dramatic shift. It's going to take a miracle for her to wake up, and Ralph sees that miracle in an audacious goal - winning the 1954 Boston Marathon. Fueled by Father Hibbert's innocent remarks on prayer, purity, faith, and the significance of the Boston Marathon, Ralph embarks on an ambitious journey to train for the race, with only 180 days on the clock. He finds allies in his friends Claire Collins and Chester Jones, and the compassionate hospital nurse Alice. Despite his skepticism, Father Hibbert, with a secretive past in running, reluctantly becomes Ralph's personal trainer, leading to a clash with Father Fitzpatrick, who believes it's his duty to put Ralph in his place. "Saint Ralph" is the stirring tale of an underdog who defies everyone's expectations, driven by a desperate belief in miracles and an unyielding desire to awaken his comatose mother. With an explosive ambition for greatness and a newfound devotion to the church of running, Ralph sets out on a bold quest to win the Boston Marathon. This is a story of faith, ambition, and the incredible power of a young boy's spirit.
