Under the iron-fisted rule of the formidable Emma Hornett, her hen-pecked husband Henry, unassuming sister Edie, and daughter Shirley eke out an existence. As Shirley prepares to tie the knot with Albert, a young sailor with an orphaned past, the Hornett household brims with anticipation. On the eve of the wedding, Albert and his best man Carnoustie find themselves reluctantly immersed in the Hornett family dynamics, their stag night curtailed by Emma's stern command.
However, the wedding day brings unexpected turmoil when Albert vanishes, throwing the household into disarray. He reappears later at the Hornett residence, sharing his apprehensions with the vicar. His fear? That his future family life may mirror the oppressive Hornett household.
