Plot

In the darkly comedic world of "Ruthless People" (1986), Sam Stone (Danny DeVito), a cunning and callous clothing tycoon, is tangled in a web of greed, deceit, and unexpected kidnappings. Married to the wealthy Barbara (Bette Midler) purely as a ticket to her inheritance, Sam has been plotting her demise for years. When he finally decides to execute his murderous plan, he finds an empty house - Barbara has been kidnapped. As an ironic twist of fate, Sam is overjoyed to discover his wife's abduction. He receives a threat from the kidnappers, Ken (Judge Reinhold) and Sandy Kessler (Helen Slater), a pair of affable amateurs who Sam swindled in the past. They demand a hefty ransom or threaten to kill Barbara. Sam, however, sees this as an opportunity to rid himself of his wife without getting his hands dirty. He promptly informs the police, hoping the kidnappers will follow through with their threats. Unbeknownst to Sam, the Kesslers are far from ruthless murderers. Instead, they find themselves grappling with Barbara's fiery spirit and volatile nature. Meanwhile, Sam's conniving mistress, Carol Dodsworth (Anita Morris), hatches her own intricate scheme to ensnare Sam's fortune, roping in her clueless boyfriend Earl Mott (Bill Pullman) and a compromising videotape. Despite the labyrinthine plots, everything spirals towards chaos when the tape ends up in the hands of the Chief of Police (William G. Schilling), framing Sam for Barbara's supposed murder. Now, Sam must scramble to keep himself out of prison, juggling the suspicions of the police, the machinations of his mistress, and the unexpected challenge of saving his wife. As the tension escalates, Barbara surprisingly begins to bond with her captors, and starts to question why her husband isn't hurrying to secure her release. "Ruthless People" is a captivating blend of dark humor and suspense, where the ruthless meet the righteous, and everyone is embroiled in a deadly game of greed, betrayal, and survival.
