Plot

In the thriving town of Red Gap, Washington, 1908, Ruggles, a distinguished British manservant, finds himself swept into a whirlwind of change as he becomes the unlikely pawn in a high-stakes poker game. His long-time employer, the Earl of Burnstead, loses him to the nouveau riche American couple, Egbert and Effie Floud. Belonging to the burgeoning upper class, Egbert is a self-made millionaire, a boisterous good old boy who enjoys his wealth sans pretension. Effie, on the other hand, yearns for the social recognition her fortune demands. Brought back to Red Gap, Ruggles is seen as a symbol of elevated social standing by Effie, while Egbert envisions him as a potential drinking companion. Amidst this discord, Ruggles faces the challenge of discerning his ultimate master in the Floud household. However, before Effie can formally introduce Ruggles as Egbert's new manservant, a humorous miscommunication leads the local newspaper to announce him as the Floud's distinguished house guest, British Colonel Marmaduke Ruggles. This unexpected twist turns Ruggles into a local celebrity overnight, his servitude forgotten in the face of his new status. As Ruggles navigates the unfamiliar waters of Red Gap's society, he befriends Mrs. Judson, a widow charmed by his culinary prowess. Inspired by the freedom and opportunity that America promises, Ruggles decides to break free from his servitude, setting his sights on opening a restaurant. His transformation from a subservient manservant to an independent entrepreneur hinges on the success of this venture. In the heart of the American frontier, Ruggles embarks on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery, challenging the rigid class structures of his past and embracing the potential of his newfound freedom.
