Plot

Brothers Randolph and Mortimer Duke are wealthy owners of Duke & Duke, a successful Philadelphia commodities brokerage. The brothers, often disagreeing with each other and making wagers on the outcomes, came up with an exciting experiment. The question that produced the investigation is whether a person's success in life is a product of their environment or heredity. Their first subject is Louis Winthorpe III, who is an employee at Duke & Duke. Winthorpe was born in a wealthy family, went to Harvard, is successful at his job, and lives in a mansion owned by the brothers. The other is a very poor street hustler named Billy Ray Valentine, who previously ran into the Dukes and Winthorpe and tried to scam them.
