Plot

In the early 1960s, young Raimond Gaita (Smit-McPhee) grows up amidst the windswept landscapes of Frogmore, Victoria. His parents, immigrant Romanian farmer Romulus (Bana) and his estranged German wife Christina (Potente), each leave an indelible mark on his upbringing. Despite their own hardships, Romulus and Christina strive to provide a meaningful life for their son. When Christina absconds to Melbourne, ensnared in a liaison with the brother of Romulus's closest friend, Romulus grapples with despair, contemplating a replacement wife from his homeland. Navigating through a labyrinth of poverty, adult mysteries, and the onset of adolescence, Rai yearns for a stable home. The absence of his depressive mother casts a looming shadow, but it is in these uncertain times that an unbreakable bond crystallizes between Romulus and Raimond. The father becomes the beacon of morality for his son, guiding him through the turbulent storms of their lives. In a world where love and madness often share the same bed, Raimond learns that reality often diverges from expectations. An elderly woman shares a profound insight with Rai—"Sometimes what you reckon and what you get ain't the same thing"—a sentiment that resonates with the essence of his journey. As time weaves its tapestry, the bond between Romulus and his son strengthens, becoming a testament to their shared resilience and an enduring symbol of unconditional love.
