Plot

A gripping saga unfurls in the forgotten sands of time, tracing the rise of the Black Pharaohs in "Rise of the Black Pharaohs" (2014). This cinematic spectacle reveals the hitherto obscured tale of the Nubians, long considered merely a vassal state of Egypt, who ascended the throne to rule over the empire of the illustrious King Tut for nearly a century. The narrative delves into the heart of Sudan, once known as Kush, from where these dark-skinned warriors emerged, challenging the very fabric of ancient history that had overlooked their rise to power. The film brilliantly uncovers the journey of this little-known kingdom, initially serving as a virtual colony that supplied Egypt with gold and mercenaries. The Nubians were culturally assimilated under the influence of a grand temple complex established at the remarkable rock formation, Jebel Barkal. This served as the birthplace of the solar deity Amun and played a crucial role in uniting the tribal Nubians under a vassal king. But as the 24th Egyptian dynasty crumbled under internal strife and external threats, the Nubians seized the opportunity. The Kushite king Piye, responding to the pleas of the high priests of Thebes, installed himself as Pharaoh, setting in motion a reign that would last nearly a century before the Assyrians and the 26th dynasty reclaimed the throne. Even after their fall, the Nubians continued to echo Egyptian practices, building pyramids around Napata and preserving their culture despite their fading significance. The film brings alive the compelling journey of these Black Pharaohs through the diligent work of archeologists Geoff Emberling and Tim Kendall. Their discoveries in a royal tomb beneath an ancient Kush pyramid and the sacred mountain heights provide irrefutable evidence of a sophisticated African society with formidable armies, spiritual depth, and imperial aspirations rivaling the Egyptians. "Rise of the Black Pharaohs" is a testament to this overlooked chapter of history, illuminating the truth of a powerful civilization that dared to rise high.
