Revolt of the Zombies (1936)

In the throes of World War I, on the fraught Franco-Austrian Frontier, a seemingly benign oriental priest, serving as the chaplain of a French colonial regiment, carries a dark secret - he harbors the power to transform men into zombies. His sinister abilities lead to his imprisonment, but not before Colonel Mazovia murders him for a half-burned parchment, a cryptic roadmap to the dreaded zombie formula. As the dust of war settles, an eclectic expedition, representing the interests of the Allied colonial powers, embarks on a chilling quest to Cambodia. Their mission? To unearth and obliterate the menacing Secret of the Zombies. Among them are the duplicitous Colonel Mazovia, Armand Louque, a scholar of ancient languages, Clifford Grayson, a stoic Englishman, and General Duval with his captivating daughter Claire. A complex love triangle ensues, with Armand proposing to Claire, not out of love, but to spite Clifford, her true love. Heartbreak and betrayal follow as Claire, shaken by an accident, turns to Clifford for solace, leading to a broken engagement and an open path to her beloved. The expedition takes a downturn as accidents orchestrated by Mazovia lead to a mutiny by the natives, forcing a retreat back to Pnom Penh. Yet, Armand, driven by a newfound clue, defies orders and ventures back to Angkor. After witnessing an ancient ritual at a temple, Armand stumbles upon a hidden chamber, its bronze walls guarding an idol harboring a gong. An accidental strike of the gong reveals the coveted secret in the form of a small metal tablet. As Armand deciphers the inscription, he realizes he now wields the fearsome power to control life and death, to make zombies at will. And so, he begins his descent into darkness, starting with his unsuspecting servant, and with his sights set on the elusive Claire. A warning to all - Armand is not a man to be crossed lightly.
