Under the oppressive rule of his iron-fisted brother-in-law, Gajendra (Pran), timid Ramchandra (Dilip Kumar) takes flight from his home, finding refuge in a quaint village. Here, the villagers mistake him for their beloved Shyamrao (also Dilip Kumar). Now, he must either embrace his new identity and the affections of Ganga (Leela Mishra) or face a dreadful fate at the hands of an exorcism. Meanwhile, a twist of fate lands Shyamrao in the very shoes of Ramchandra, as he is misidentified by the enchanting Anjana (Waheeda Rehman) and her father (Nazir Hussain). The discovery of this mistaken identity sends Gajendra into a maddening rage, but Shyamrao, unlike Ramchandra, refuses to be a victim of his wrath.
