Rain (1932)

In the tranquil heart of the Pacific, the South Seas island of Pago Pago stands as an oasis of simplicity, its serene rhythm undisturbed. A boat's arrival, however, shatters this peaceful solitude, bringing with it a motley crew of newcomers: the righteous missionary Alfred Davidson and his wife, Dr. MacPhail and his spouse, and a provocative woman of the night, Sadie Thompson. The island's quietude is replaced by the humming of Sadie's phonograph and the boisterous revelries she hosts, enthralling the local military police, led by the dashing Sgt. Tim O'Hara - or "Handsome," as Sadie affectionately dubs him. But beneath Sadie's vivacious exterior lie secrets of a shadowy past and crimes that haunt her from San Francisco, pushing her to seek refuge in Sydney or perhaps another hideaway in the Pacific. Davidson, however, finds himself appalled by Sadie's lifestyle, his religious zeal tipping into madness. He leverages his influence with the governor, intending to drive Sadie off the island and back to San Francisco to face her past. This move infuriates Sgt. O'Hara, who, smitten by Sadie, resolves to help her escape to Sydney, Australia. Amidst these turbulent dynamics, Davidson's fervent prayers and incessant attempts at salvation kindle a change in Sadie. She begins to regret her previous life and contemplates returning to San Francisco to confront the justice she's been running from. But Davidson's escalating obsession with her redemption spirals out of control, triggering a cascade of unexpected events, plunging their paradisiacal refuge into chaos and hurtling towards an unforeseen disaster. Every character is left to grapple with the consequences, their lives forever altered on the once idyllic island of Pago Pago.
