Plot

In the heart of the 17th-century Brazilian wilderness, a fortress of freedom christened Palmares, emerges from the echoes of clanking chains and whispered prayers of escaped plantation slaves. The year is 1650, and a revolt sparks a mass exodus towards the mountains, where the slaves encounter a band of freedom fighters guided by the venerable seer, Acotirene. Amid the hopeful and the desperate, she crowns a legendary king, Ganga Zumba, and thus begins a saga of resilience against the Portuguese oppressors. For years, Zumba's warriors deflect the onslaught of the Portuguese raiders, creating a haven of liberty in the rugged mountain fastness. However, in a moment of ill-fated compromise, Zumba trades their mountainous sanctuary for reservation land and a fragile promise of peace, a decision that proves detrimental. Zumbi, a fierce warrior whose mother fell victim to the Portuguese and who has endured a decade and a half under the thumb of the Whites, chooses not to descend from the mountains. Instead, he steps up to lead Palmares, keeping the torch of freedom burning. But when the Portuguese, in a desperate bid to reclaim their lost property, import a merciless captain from São Paulo to obliterate the free Blacks in 1694, Zumbi faces the ultimate test of his leadership. Can he safeguard the precious freedom of Palmares?
