Isaac Knott, a revered voice in New York City's physically disabled community, has been navigating life from a wheelchair since a tragic car accident claimed his parents' lives and his mobility at the tender age of eight. As a public radio reporter for NPR, his insightful narratives delve into the lives of those living with disabilities, often interweaving his own experiences into the stories he shares. However, Isaac's life takes an unexpected turn when an anonymous tip leads him down a rabbit hole into a world he never knew existed - a subculture of able-bodied individuals obsessed with the idea of disability. Among these individuals are the 'wannabes', people who, driven by a bizarre fascination, yearn to become physically disabled themselves. Isaac's source, the enigmatic art conservator Fiona Ankany, is one such wannabe. Their relationship blossoms into a quid pro quo arrangement; she promises to shed light on this perplexing subculture in exchange for insights into his personal experiences. Despite the unconventional circumstances, an undeniable attraction develops between them, complicating Isaac's lingering feelings for his recent ex-girlfriend, Raine.
