Plot

In the tranquil setting of Corsica, Hélène, a dedicated chambermaid, pedals her way to a seaside inn and spends her spare afternoons scrubbing neighboring houses. Her mundane life takes a riveting turn when she witnesses a couple sharing an intimate moment over a game of chess at the veranda. Captivated by the mysterious allure of the game and its potential for intimacy, Hélène ventures into the world of chess, gifting her indifferent husband a set for his birthday. Finding no enthusiasm from her husband, she embarks on a solitary journey of mastering chess under the moonlight while her husband slumbers. Her determination leads her to the door of her client, Dr. Kröger, a reclusive American expat, who reluctantly agrees to instruct her, only to discover her surprising aptitude for the game. As Hélène delves deeper into the world of chess, her obsession stirs more than just the pieces; it unsettles the quiet routine of her life, and agitates the societal norms. Hélène's passion for the game and her unconventional mentorship with Dr. Kröger transform their dull, daily existence, inviting disapproval and skepticism from her family, who believe she's strayed beyond her status. Faced with setbacks and resistance, Hélène finds herself at a crossroads. Will she surrender to the restrictive worldview of her family, or will she continue her captivating pursuit of chess? And the intimacy she seeks, will she find it in the strategic corners of the chessboard or somewhere unexpected? Queen to Play is a stirring cinematic exploration of passion, transformation, and the unexpected checkmates life throws our way.
