Plot

In an ironic twist of fate, Punching the Clown, the audience's darling at the Slamdance Film Festival, unravels the journey of Henry Phillips, a modern-day minstrel bearing the weight of his own misfortune. Traversing the heartland with naught but his car and a repertoire of darkly humorous songs, Henry becomes a troubadour for the disinterested and the curious. A disastrous misunderstanding at a Christian fundraiser, however, convinces him that he's scraping the barrel of his luck. Seeking a change of pace, Henry ventures into the whirlwind world of Los Angeles. Here, serendipity smiles upon him, not through the bungling efforts of his inept manager, but due to an amusing case of mistaken identity. Suddenly, he's thrust into the spotlight, juggling packed gigs, a record deal, and the tantalizing whisper of romance. Yet, the capricious nature of showbiz proves a tricky beast; it giveth and taketh away in equal measure. Reality delivers a knockout punch when a harmless misinterpretation over a bagel paints him as a neo-Nazi in the sensationalist realm of tabloid journalism. Undeterred and somewhere between the rock bottom and the abyss, Henry finds the perfect setting for his uniquely twisted songs. The saga of Punching the Clown is a testament to life's absurdities, served with a side of satirical serenades.
