Plot

Slick corporate salesman, Steve Butler (Matt Damon), and his savvy partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), descend upon a rural town, reminiscent of a forgotten America. The town, marred by the relentless economic downturn, is the perfect canvas for their latest mission - to buy drilling rights from the beleaguered citizens, promising them an economic lifeline. This seemingly straightforward task, however, unravels as the undercurrents of the community rise to the surface. Here, the duo encounters the quiet resilience of a respected schoolteacher, Frank Yates (Hal Holbrook), a man whose objection to their corporate agenda echoes like a bell in the quiet town. His words of caution find fertile ground in the minds of the townfolk, not least in the hearts of Dustin (John Krasinski) and Alice (Rosemarie DeWitt), who fan the flames of this resistance into a grassroots campaign against the proposed drilling. As the battle lines are drawn, the conflict becomes personal and professional for Steve, who finds himself not only defending corporate interests, but also his reputation for delivering results. The once welcoming locals are now adversaries, and the promised land starts to seem much less promising. The stage is set for a showdown, where the stakes are higher than just the fate of a small town. The movie paints a vivid picture of the struggle between corporate pursuit and community values, promising a compelling journey of conflict and conscience.
