Plot

In the heart of 1933, resides Professor Hans Mamlock, a revered chief surgeon at a prestigious university hospital. Despite his Jewish heritage, Mamlock remains blissfully detached from the rising political storm and the burgeoning Nazi menace. He is a man who identifies profoundly as a German, his faith unwavering in the inherent decency of his people, dismissing any association with the barbaric tendencies of the Nazi regime. His staunch political neutrality blinds him to the passionate convictions of those around him, including Walter, a patient, and most notably, his own son, Rolf. Rolf's decision to align with the communist resistance against the Nazis results in a familial schism, with Mamlock casting Rolf from their home. Meanwhile, the sinister shadow of anti-Semitism looms over his daughter, who becomes a victim of prejudiced attacks at school. But Mamlock, in his steadfast denial, dismisses her experiences and overlooks the brewing bigotry from his colleague, Dr. Hellpach. However, as the 1930s progress, the harsh reality of the anti-Jewish laws strikes Mamlock with an unanticipated force. By 1938, he finds himself stripped of his position, his German citizenship voided, and his dignity crushed as Nazi guards escort him from his beloved hospital. Overwhelmed by this shocking revelation, Mamlock spirals into desperation, leading him down a path of drastic measures. This poignant narrative paints a picture of a man grappling with the brutal betrayal of his homeland, underscoring the tragic consequences of ignorance and denial.
