An elderly farmer named Okina discovers a glowing bamboo stalk that produces a fairy which transforms into a baby. As the infant grows into a beautiful girl, the farmer and his wife make the decision to take her to the capital of Kyoto, where she will learn how to be a lady. This training will make her eligible to the country’s finest suitors. But is this her true fate?
