Plot

In the turbulent year of 1788, a vessel named Africa embarks on a harrowing journey from the shores of West Africa to America, its belly brimming with a lucrative yet fragile cargo--hundreds of human lives, shackled and silenced. Six months later, the survivors are auctioned off in Natchez, Mississippi, where a 26-year-old man named Abdul-Rahman is sold. He makes a startling assertion to the farmer who acquires him-- he is an African prince, promising gold for his liberation. His plea falls on deaf ears, and he remains in bondage for another four decades. During these years of servitude on the Foster plantation, Abdul-Rahman finds solace in marriage and fatherhood, raising nine children. His remarkable story propels him into the limelight, making him the most famous African in America and garnering the attention of influential figures like President John Quincy Adams. After enduring forty years of enslavement, Abdul-Rahman finally regains his freedom. However, he defies the directive to immediately return to Africa, instead traversing the northern states and sharing his story with captivated audiences in an attempt to raise funds to liberate his children. At the ripe age of 67, having released two of his children from the chains of servitude, Abdul-Rahman sets sail for Africa. Tragically, as news of his return reaches his homeland of Futa Jalloo, now part of modern-day Guinea, he succumbs to illness. Abdul-Rahman's resilience in the face of extraordinary trials, his undying love for his family, and his unwavering faith as a Muslim, form the crux of his survival through the brutal realities of slavery.
