Possessed (1947)

In the bustling labyrinth of Los Angeles, a woman, lost in the grip of emotional turmoil, aimlessly roams the city streets. She is ensnared in a troubling delusion, approaching unfamiliar men whom she hauntingly refers to as "David". Her erratic behavior soon necessitates an ambulance, delivering her into the hands of the city hospital's psychiatric ward. Under the careful watch of Dr. Harvey Willard, she is sedated, her scattered memories beginning to form a coherent narrative. Her tale unfolds a year earlier, when she, Louise Howell, a solitary registered nurse, is employed by affluent Dean Graham. Her role is to tend to his gravely ill wife, Pauline, confined to their lakeside abode just outside Washington, DC. Amidst the isolation, Pauline's suspicion grows, suspecting an illicit affair between Dean and Louise. Louise finds herself caught in an intricate web of emotions, acknowledging Dean's evident loneliness-infused affection for her. The mysterious "David" is revealed to be David Sutton, a civil engineer residing on the opposing shore of the lake from the Grahams. Louise's secret liaison with him was meant to be fleeting, but when he attempts to sever their ties, he discovers her love for him has spiraled into obsession. Displaying a manipulative knack, Louise crafts scenarios to keep herself in David's orbit, even from a distance. A dangerous thought takes root in her mind: if she cannot have David, then surely no one else should. As Louise's tale unfurls, it is revealed she has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a secret she has guarded fiercely. This revelation casts her narrative in a new light for Dr. Willard, leaving him to discern the real from the delusional within her fragmented recollections.
