Plot

In the unforgiving heart of rural Texas, 1935, Edna Spalding grapples with a life turned upside down. She finds herself a widowed mother of two, bereaved and penniless, following a tragic accident that snatches away her husband, the town's Sheriff. Left with a small, debt-ridden farm under the shadow of the Great Depression, Edna faces a harsh reality of survival and resilience. A glimmer of hope emerges from unexpected corners. Moze, a wandering black man with a questionable past, crosses paths with Edna and her struggling family. Instead of disappearing into anonymity, he stays to teach her the intricate art of cotton farming, a lifeline to keep her farm afloat and her children sheltered. Simultaneously, Edna opens her humble abode to a blind boarder, Mr. Will, a war veteran who has lost more than his sight in the throes of the first World War. A unique camaraderie develops as they both navigate through their personal losses and the harsh realities of their time. Amidst whirlwinds of manual labor, the looming specter of foreclosure, a deadly tornado, and the sinister presence of the Ku Klux Klan, Edna finds an unexpected ally in her beautician sister, Margaret. Together, they plow through the storms of societal prejudice, financial hardship, and relentless labor as the clock ticks down to the mortgage due date. "Places in the Heart" paints a poignant portrait of resilience and community in times of adversity, as Edna Spalding, with the help of her unusual companions, strives to preserve her family and home, one cotton crop at a time.
