Plot

In the glamorous haze of the 1930's, two American sisters, Eugenia Crocker and Nesta Pett, are locked in a fierce, glittering rivalry. Both are extraordinarily affluent, yet their wealth is tainted by a bitter competition. Nesta hatches a scheme to marry her niece, Ann Chester, a poetess turned crime novelist, to the aristocratic Lord Reginald Wisbeach, in a desperate bid to bring royalty into the family. Ann, however, has no love for the uptight Lord and is highly resistant to Nesta's machinations. Meanwhile, Eugenia, now residing in the vibrant city of London, is on a relentless pursuit to purchase nobility. Her ambitions are continuously thwarted by the scandalous exploits of her stepson, James Crocker, also known as Piccadilly Jim. Once a gossip columnist, notorious for his womanizing, brawling, gambling, and drunken escapades, Piccadilly Jim yearns for a more respectable life, especially after falling head over heels for a captivating American visitor, Ann Chester. Haunted by a previous critique by Piccadilly Jim, Ann despises the man she's never met, believing him to have sabotaged her poetry career. Unaware of her prejudice, Jim, under the alias of Algernon Bayliss, the Crocker family butler, follows her back to New York in an attempt to win her heart. Ann, desiring a man who combines respectability with danger, finds herself drawn to "Bayliss". However, a whirlwind of mistaken identities, a German spy, a false maid, a volatile explosive concoction, and a mischievous plot involving Ann's whiskey-loving, chain-smoking little brother, Ogden, create a tempestuous backdrop to Jim's pursuit of love. Amidst this chaotic panorama, Ann must decipher her true desires, while Jim must navigate the labyrinth of deceit. Will he be able to reveal his true identity and still claim Ann's heart? In this high-society game of love and deception, the stakes are as dizzying as a jazz-age party, and the outcome is anything but predictable.
