Plot

Peterloo (2018) is a monumental depiction of the haunting events that converged on the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Underneath a seemingly tranquil pro-democracy demonstration at St Peter's Field in Manchester, a grim scene unfolds, marking one of the darkest chapters in British history. The rally, fuelled by the people's pleas for political reform and an end to escalating poverty, swells to a staggering 60,000. However, their cries for justice are met with the brutal might of government forces, turning the peaceful assembly into a nightmarish spectacle. In the ensuing chaos, countless demonstrators are massacred and hundreds wounded, igniting a firestorm of public outrage but also ushering in an era of intensified government repression. Peterloo emerges not only as a pivotal turning point in the journey of British democracy, but also as the grim inspiration behind the birth of The Guardian newspaper. This film captures a historical moment of immense significance, etched in the annals of time, serving as a stark reminder of the price paid for freedom and justice.
