Plot

In the bustling city of New York, Sam Harper, a shrewd salesman for Allied Barter Trade, a unique company that trades in overstocked goods, finds himself tangled in a web of reluctance and resentment. Facing an unwelcome journey to Los Angeles for his estranged father's funeral, Sam grapples with his complex emotions towards his deceased father, Jerry Harper, a music industry tycoon who has always been aloof. This painful estrangement has spilled over, damaging Sam's relationship with his mother, Lillian, who remains a collateral victim of their father-son rift. Wrenched from his comfort zone by his supportive girlfriend, Hannah, Sam lands in Los Angeles, where he is entrusted with a post-mortem task by the family lawyer, Ike Rafferty. This task unravels a shocking revelation - a shaving kit filled with $150,000 cash intended for Josh Davis, a precocious, mischievous eleven-year-old, and his mother Frankie Davis. Frankie, a hardworking bartender and recovering alcoholic, is revealed to be Sam's half-sister, a product of their father's secret affair. As Sam grapples with this newfound family and looming financial and legal troubles back in New York, he must make a crucial decision. With Frankie, who shares a similar workaholic streak, oblivious to Sam's true identity, and Josh, a rebellious boy hiding his loneliness behind inappropriate humor, Sam must navigate a path to reconciliation. He understands that the longer he conceals the truth, the more challenging the revelation will be for everyone involved. The plot of "People Like Us" (2012) unfolds as Sam embarks on a journey of self-discovery, redemption, and understanding. His mission is to mend the rifts of the past, bring together his fragmented family, and deliver his father's last wish. However, the road to reconciliation is fraught with emotional turmoil and unexpected challenges. Will Sam succeed in his quest, or will his father's legacy remain tarnished by undisclosed secrets and unhealed wounds? Only time will tell.
