Payment in Blood (1967)

In the tumultuous aftermath of the American Civil War, 1867 Texas is a scattered tableau of Confederate remnants unwilling to acknowledge their defeat. Among them, Colonel Thomas Blake, a figure draped in controversy and whispers of madness, and his ragtag band of soldiers terrorize Yankee settlements. Their brutal raids, often attributed more to Blake’s sadistic pleasures than the Confederate cause, make them the target of hefty bounties. Blake’s cunning, however, makes him an elusive quarry. Yet beneath his ruthless exterior, he harbors an insatiable desire – a lost treasure of 200,000 dollars missing from the Confederate coffers in the war's twilight. This fortune, last seen in the iron grip of Confederate General Beauregard, becomes Blake’s obsession. He dispatches his trusted aide, Chamaco Gonzales, on a clandestine mission to probe the disbanded Confederate soldiers for clues about the lost strong box. But when Chamaco is seized by Union forces and sentenced to death, an unlikely savior appears. A mysterious figure named Stuart intervenes, rescuing Chamaco from the jaws of death and requesting an audience with Blake. Together, they traverse the Rio Grande into Mexico, landing in Blake’s secret hideaway. Stuart carries a tantalizing proposition: he served under General Beauregard and knows the final resting place of the coveted strong box, buried within a Comanche cemetery on American soil. Blake, despite his suspicions, opts to trust Stuart, embarking on a perilous journey back to the USA. The promise of the buried treasure lures them forward, through a landscape fraught with danger and uncertainty, in a desperate bid to reclaim the elusive riches for the Confederacy. Their quest echoes with the cries of a fallen South, a testament to the enduring spirit of rebellion and the lengths men will go for a cause they believe in.
