Plot

In the heart of Rome, 67 AD, the city smolders in the aftermath of an inferno that has ravaged its grandeur. Emperor Nero, in his twisted thirst for power, pins the blame on Paul, one of Jesus' apostles. He is taken captive and thrown into the gloomy depths of Mamertine Prison, a move that only intensifies Nero's tyranny. Mauritius, the prison's conflicted prefect, finds himself torn between the responsibilities of his post and his daughter, Caelia, who is gripped by an unidentifiable illness. As Nero's puppet, he feels his military career dwindling into a failure. In the midst of this turmoil, Luke, a physician from the Greek Islands, braves the dangers in Rome to find Paul. He seeks refuge in the house of Aquila and Priscilla, two former Romans who have embraced Christianity, turning their home into a sanctuary for their fellow believers, shielding them from Nero's ruthless soldiers. These soldiers paint the city streets with the blood of Christians, using them as human torches in Nero's grotesque display of power. Once Luke becomes aware of Paul's imprisonment, he maneuvers his way into the prison. Paul, bound by chains yet resilient, agrees to share his life story with Luke before his imminent execution. As Luke diligently transcribes Paul's journey from the inception of "The Way" to the birth of the church, Paul wrestles with his past demons – a survivor of numerous abuses, shipwreck, and starvation, tormented by the prospect of death and a violent past he can't escape. Mauritius, upon discovering Luke's clandestine visits, sees an opportunity to regain Nero's favor, hoping that Paul will confess to igniting the fire. Intrigued by Luke's determination, Mauritius allows more meetings between him and Paul, much to the disdain of his wife, Irenica, who is already tortured by Caelia's ailment. In the face of escalating violence, the Christian couple, Priscilla and Aquila, grapple with the decision to flee Rome with their rescued brethren, or stay and continue their rescue mission, while Luke's life hangs in the balance due to Mauritius' ambitions. As the sand in the hourglass runs low, Luke must face his destiny, a path that could alter not only his fate but the course of the world.
