First Reformed (2018)

Ernst Toller is a pastor of a small church who finds himself grappling not just with his own depression, loneliness, and PTSD, but also with his faith. Toller lost his son, and he finds that trauma wrenching back to the surface suddenly when he's left to deal with the trauma of a parishioner's suicide. It's the type of shock that sends him into a spiritual spiral and starts exploring deeper and more esoteric forms of Christian theology. When Toller is brought in to consult with a fervent environmentalist, it helps him put his own sense of morality into sharper relief.
