Plot

The intoxicating story of "Paradise Lost" (2018) unfolds in the heat of Brazil, against the rhythmic backdrop of a timeless nightclub, Paraíso Perdido, where sentiments are poured out in the form of romantic music. Weaving the threads of the past and the present together, the film explores the intricate relationships and dark secrets of a complex family led by José, the patriarch. In the heart of the narrative lie Nadia, a talented singer, and her ex-husband Joao Oliveira Santana, a police captain who casts a long shadow over their lives. In the tumultuous 1980s, they were a couple lost in the turbulent waves of domestic violence and infidelity. Trapped in a cycle of abuse, Nadia tragically loses her hearing at Joao's hands while expecting their son, Odair. Concurrently, secret passions bloom in the shadows; Nadia seeks solace with Angelo, a fellow singer, leading to the birth of Celeste, while Joao's own illicit affair with Angelo's sister, Eva, results in another child, Ima. In a twisted turn of fate, Eva, heavy with Joao's child and black-eyed from his violence, takes the law into her own hands and murders him. As a result, she is incarcerated, giving birth to Ima behind bars and finding unexpected love with Milene, an innocent con artist. Meanwhile, Nadia, emerging from a coma induced by Joao's brutality, retreats into obscurity, leaving Odair to look after her and follow in his father's law-enforcing footsteps. Fast forward to 2017, and a chance encounter with Teylor, a singer and suitor of Celeste, leads Odair to Paraíso Perdido, where he unintentionally steps into the role of Ima's protector. As he grows closer to his half-sister, he is drawn into the web of his family's past, discovering his mother's image in Angelo's dressing room and striking up a relationship with the newly released Eva and her partner, Milene. As Odair navigates these turbulent waters, he uncovers the startling truth about his father's death, leading him to orchestrate a reunion of Nadia and Angelo. "Paradise Lost" is a cinematic tapestry of love, betrayal, and redemption, layered with the melodies of a nightclub trapped in time, echoing the raw and complex emotions of its patrons.
