Plot

In the intriguing biographical drama, "Pad Man" (2018), we follow the story of Laxmikanth Chauhan, a workshop tool operator with an unconventional mission. Deeply disturbed by the societal treatment of women during menstruation, he embarks on a journey to change the status quo. Upon marrying, his wife, Gayatri, becomes the catalyst for his mission when he witnesses her using unhygienic cloth during her menstrual cycle. The high cost of sanitary napkins leads him to a trailblazing decision - to manufacture cost-effective sanitary napkins himself. Despite his wife's initial resistance due to the societal stigma and his early failures, Laxmi's determination remains unshaken. His efforts, however, are met with derision and scorn, eventually leading to his expulsion from his village and his family disowning him. Unfazed, Laxmi takes his efforts to a new level, modeling a makeshift uterus from a football bladder and filling it with goat's blood. This extraordinary act, while shocking to some, is a testament to his unwavering dedication. Roaming the streets with the homemade uterus, Laxmi tests the absorption rate of his own sanitary napkins, a testament to his innovative spirit and unrelenting pursuit for women's health. Drawing inspiration from the life of Tamil Nadu activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, "Pad Man" highlights the courage it takes to challenge societal norms. It's a compelling tale about one man's quest to provide underprivileged women access to basic hygiene, thereby revolutionizing the rural landscape in India.
