Plot

In the aftermath of World War II, the Webers, an ordinary Berlin family, grapple with the tides of change sweeping through their city. Karl Weber, the patriarch and a simple cashier, finds himself straddling two contrasting worlds. He watches with bewilderment as his son Ernst immerses himself in the creation of a novel socialist society, a vision he struggles to comprehend. Karl's confidant is his other son, Harry, whose descent into the murky world of illicit dealings forces Karl to reassess his loyalties. Drawn to Ernst's vision, Karl ultimately finds himself joining his son at the forefront of a citizen-owned factory, a beacon of the "new order" in East Germany. This tale is brought to life by director Slatan Dudow, a stalwart of the Weimar Republic's proletarian German film tradition, who sought to create art that stimulates the viewer's psyche. "Our Daily Bread" is a testament to Dudow's commitment to socialist realism, and his ability to capture the nuances of socialist life in vivid detail make it a standout film of its era. The heart of the film is the riveting score by Hanns Eisler, whose return from American exile brought a dynamic musical backdrop that both challenges and captivates, adding another layer of depth to the portrayal of a Berlin rising from the ashes. This film serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of supporting the burgeoning "new order", offering an almost documentary-like glimpse into a world in transformation.
