Orange County (2002)

In the sun-drenched, wave-kissed landscape of Orange County, Shaun Brumder, a high school senior and local surfer, is caught in the throes of a life-altering transition. Following the tragic death of his surfing companion, Lonny, while riding extreme waves, and the accidental discovery of Marcus Skinner's book "Straight Jacket," buried like a treasure in the sandy beach, Shaun's life takes a dramatic turn. This book, consumed voraciously and repeatedly, ignites a beacon in his brain, illuminating a path to his future - he is destined to become a writer. Shedding his carefree surfer persona like an old skin, Shaun turns his focus to academics, excelling effortlessly, earning a 4.0 GPA in his senior year, and even securing the title of class president. His sights are set on Stanford's prestigious English program, led by none other than his literary beacon, Marcus Skinner. With such stellar achievements, his acceptance into Stanford seems inevitable, at least according to his scatterbrained guidance counselor, Ms. Cobb. But life, or rather the cosmos, has a twisted sense of humor. Shaun's journey towards his dream is fraught with obstacles, most notably his own eccentric family. There's Lance, his perpetually stoned elder brother, Cindy, his perpetually inebriated mother drowning her regrets in alcohol, Bud, his distant father engrossed in his business and his new, rather vapid trophy wife. Even Ashley, his girlfriend and animal activist, covertly wishes for his Stanford dreams to crumble so that he wouldn't leave her behind for his journey to Stanford. When his application is rejected due to a mix-up by his hapless counselor, Shaun, with the unlikely help of Ashley and Lance, embarks on a mission to secure his place at Stanford by any means necessary. As he battles the cosmos, Shaun finds himself caught in a whirlwind of realizations about his desperation to escape to Stanford, his dysfunctional family, and his own life. Will he be able to overcome these hurdles, or does destiny have other plans for the surfer-turned-scholar from Orange County?
