Plot

In the gripping documentary "Only the Dead", an ordinary man is thrust into the extraordinary world of war journalism. The protagonist is Michael Ware, a Time magazine correspondent initially drawn to the Middle East by aftershocks of 9/11. But his story transcends routine war reportage when he becomes an unwilling player in the terrifying theatre of conflict, handed a chilling videotape by some of the world's most feared terrorists, marking his cataclysmic entry onto the global stage. This documentary is a chronicle of Ware's seven-year odyssey in Iraq, beginning with the invasion in 2003. It's not just a recounting of the Iraq War and its aftermath, but a deeply personal journey into the heart of the conflict. As Ware plunges into the murkiest depths of the war, he finds himself in the unsettling company of insurgent groups, including the one led by the notorious terrorist leader, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi. "Only the Dead" is a patchwork of harrowing experiences, stitched together with footage provided by these insurgent groups and Al-Zarqawi's faction. It's a visual testament to Ware's relentless quest for truth, even as he navigates the treacherous labyrinth of warfare and terrorism. The film lays bare the reality of the conflict, presenting an unfiltered view that goes beyond headlines and news reports. As Ware seeks answers, the audience is taken on an epic, heart-rending journey, exploring the darkest corners of a war that has left indelible scars on the canvas of history.
