Plot

In the throbbing heart of New York City, the political scene is aflame with the fierce competition of an upcoming mayoral election. Among the contenders is a strategically shrewd District Attorney, desperate to secure the minority vote. His plan? To arrest and convict a white man, a scheme he's yet to successfully implement. However, the city's fate takes an unexpected turn when a young black man becomes the victim of a hit-and-run, sparking the interest of an audaciously ambitious A.D.A and the ethically dubious reporter, Peter Fallow. The city ignites with tension as the outspoken Reverend Bacon stokes the public's anger, using the incident to fan the embers of societal discord. At the center of this tumultuous storm is Sherman McCoy, a white financier and self-proclaimed "Master of the Universe". His life, once controlled and luxurious, starts to unravel when he's implicated in the accident. The car involved belongs to him, but at the wheel was his mistress, Maria Ruskin, a married woman who refuses to let McCoy confess. As the scandal becomes a feeding frenzy for the media, Peter Fallow, a salacious journalist, twists the truth into a distorted narrative that sends shockwaves through the city. The case quickly becomes a political pawn, seized upon by opportunists like Reverend Bacon and the mayoral candidate D.A. Abe Weiss who decides to prosecute McCoy. In this electrifying blend of power, ambition, and scandal, Fallow stumbles upon a revelation that could drastically alter the course of the case. But there's a catch - McCoy can't use it. The two men must navigate the treacherous political waters of New York City, seeking a way to expose the truth amidst the roaring bonfire of vanities.
